Cake Packaging Size Guide
Board-to-Box Fit
Your cake board should match the diameter of your cake — not the box. The box should be 2" wider than the board so the board and cake sit centered with clearance on all sides. For example, a 6" cake on a 6" board fits in an 8" box.
| Cake & Board Size | Recommended Box Size |
|---|---|
| 4" | 6" |
| 6" | 8" |
| 8" | 10" |
| 10" | 12" |
| 12" | 14" |
Box Height by Cake Height
Choose a box tall enough that the lid closes without touching your decorations. Allow at least 1" of clearance above the top of your cake or tallest decoration.
| Cake Height | Minimum Box Height |
|---|---|
| Up to 3" (single layer) | 4" |
| Up to 5" (double layer) | 6" |
| Up to 7" (triple layer or tall double) | 8" |
| Taller / tiered sections | See Tall Cake Boxes |
Stacked & Tiered Cakes
Each tier of a stacked cake sits on its own board and is supported by internal dowels or straws before stacking. Box the fully assembled cake in a box sized to the bottom tier, using the height guide above for the total assembled height.
Unusually Shaped Cakes
For sculpted or irregular shapes, measure the widest point and the tallest point, then apply the same +2" width rule and minimum 1" height clearance.
